Once again significantly more insolvencies than in the previous year

As in the previous months, the number of corporate and consumer insolvencies increased by double digits in November. Insolvencies filed with the local courts increased by 18.8 percent compared to the same month last year, according to preliminary results from the Federal Statistical Office. "Double-digit year-on-year growth rates have thus been observed consistently since June 2023," explained the statisticians.

Final figures are usually available after three months, as the applications are only included in the statistics after a court decision has been made. The statistics office therefore reported final results for the period from January to September: 13,270 companies went bankrupt during this period - 24.7 percent more than in the same period last year.

Creditors' claims from these insolvencies amounted to around 21.1 billion euros. In the same period last year, the figure was 10.8 billion. According to the figures, there were 39.1 insolvencies per 10,000 companies from January to September, most of them (79.5 per 10,000) in the transport and warehousing sector.

Despite the months-long rise in figures, experts do not yet see a wave of insolvencies. However, individual sectors are under particular pressure, such as energy-intensive companies and the construction industry.

In the first nine months of the year, the number of consumer insolvencies rose only slightly by 0.2 percent year-on-year to 50,018. With consumer insolvency, debtors can partially repay their debts within three years and are then debt-free.
