Olaf Scholz reveals plans to procure an additional 20 Eurofighter fighter jets.
Federal Chancellor Olaf Scholz has made plans to purchase 20 more Eurofighter combat planes, planning to sign the contract with Airbus Group's consortium during this current legislative period. This commitment to the European aerospace industry was made at the Berlin Air Show ILA. Scholz expressed in X that the federal government desires "a robust aerospace sector in Germany and Europe," and part of this objective is the protection of these companies through consistent orders.
The anticipation for future orders had been prevalent within the industry, with the 20 new aircraft joining the 38 previously ordered four years ago. The delivery of these planes are projected for the years 2025 to 2030, having a value of approximately 5.5 billion euros. The monetary worth of the new order was not disclosed by Scholz.
He passionately advocated for the conservation and expansion of defense production capabilities during his time at ILA. Moreover, the government is actively pursuing more opportunities for the Eurofighter, such as potential exports. The drive is to continuously engage production facilities.
Scholz also unveiled that Germany intends to "invest along with our partners in the progression of the Eurofighter." This commitment extends to "the development of unmanned escorts," which refers to the development of drones that are connected to the aircraft.
