Fire at sea - Odyssey over to Fire on Mallorca-Ferry finally ends
Five days after the fire on a ferry to Mallorca, the drama has come to an end for now. Those among the total of 350 passengers who had vehicles on board are finally getting them back, after a long period of uncertainty. The loading of the vehicles will be "completed soon", said the spokeswoman of the responsible Italian shipping company GNV in response to a query.
The car ferry "Tenacia" caught fire in the machine room during the night on Monday on its way from Valencia to Mallorca. There were no injuries reported in the incident. However, many passengers, including several truck drivers who were traveling professionally, did not reach the Spanish holiday island.
The passengers were returned to Valencia on Monday, as that is where the stricken vessel was towed, with cars and luggage left behind. The number of those stranded there was not clear from GNV. Some refused to wait and flew to Mallorca on their own, while others cancelled their holidays, according to the newspaper "Última Hora" and other media.
The passengers were concerned that they would not get their vehicles and trucks back in good condition. They feared damage from firefighting efforts. A video shared on social media by the fire department showed burned trucks. According to GNV, the vehicles should be in good condition.
The cause of the fire is still unknown. At the time, there were 350 passengers, 61 crew members, and four pets on board. The ship sailed north of Ibiza for hours before the captain gave the evacuation order on Monday afternoon. According to the captain, there was never a significant risk to the passengers.
