Reopening - Observatory in Greifswald celebrates reopening and jubilee
The renowned observatory in Greifswald has reopened after several years of renovation. The reopening marks the beginning of a large jubilee program on the occasion of the 100-year anniversary of the observatory. "We want to open the door to the world of research for young people and ignite their enthusiasm for nature and technology – the observatory is perfect for that", said the President of the German Science Foundation, Michael Kaschke.
The telescope on site is unique worldwide, according to the Chairman of the Board of the Observatory, Tobias Röwf. "We have two different telescopes on one mount at one location", he explained. The observatory Greifswald is something special. The three-meter long telescope has reportedly been restored by a specialist since 2021. Röwf also gave his farewell speech at the event and passed on his position to his successor.
Overall, more than 170,000 Euro have been invested in the modernization of the observatory. The renovation was financed to various extents by the University of Greifswald, the association, and the company Zeiss.
