Obama thanks Biden - no support yet for Harris
In a statement, former President Barack Obama thanks his former Vice President Joe Biden for leaving the Presidential race. The withdrawal must have been one of the most difficult decisions in Biden's entire life, but what he doesn't write is even more interesting.
Former US President Barack Obama has praised Joe Biden's withdrawal from the Presidential race - but has not publicly endorsed Kamala Harris as the Democratic replacement. In a statement, he calls Biden one of the most significant Presidents in American history and a "beloved friend and partner" for him.
However, Obama's support for Kamala Harris as the Democratic nominee has not been expressed yet. "We will navigate through uncharted waters in the coming days. But I have extraordinary faith that our party's leaders will create a process that produces an outstanding candidate," it only says.
The withdrawal must have been one of the most difficult decisions in Biden's entire life, Obama continued. "But I know he wouldn't make this decision if he didn't believe it was right for America." Biden had "once again put the interests of the American people above his own." He had every right to seek re-election based on his "remarkable record of achievement."
However, a report by the "Washington Post" speaks a different language. Obama had expressed doubts about a potential re-nomination of US President Joe Biden to friends, according to the report. Obama believed Biden's chance of winning had diminished and that the 81-year-old should "seriously consider the feasibility of his candidacy," the "Washington Post" reported a few days ago from Obama's circle. However, there was no direct response from Obama.
Biden served as Vice President under Obama from 2009 to 2017 and still has significant influence in the Democratic Party and is the most prominent party member who could have called Biden to run for the nomination.
Trump also commented on his rival's withdrawal - and with numerous accusations. "The corrupt Joe Biden was not able to run for the office of President, and he is certainly not able to serve in the office - and was he ever!", wrote the former President on his online platform Truth Social.
He accused Biden of "only getting the Presidency through lies, fake news, and by not leaving his basement," and also accused people close to Biden, his doctor, and the media of knowing that Biden "cannot handle the Presidency." The rest of his message fell into typical campaign rhetoric about immigration.
Barack Obama's views on Biden's potential participation in the United States Presidency Election 2024 remain unclear, despite expressing admiration for his former vice president. In a private conversation, Obama reportedly expressed doubts about Biden's re-nomination to friends, according to a Washington Post report.
As the 2024 United States Presidency Election approaches, the political landscape continues to shift, with Barack Obama's views on Joe Biden's candidacy being a significant factor to watch.
