Nutmeg levels are decreasing once more, and it appears Dresden might evade the repercussions.
In various regions, including the south and neighboring countries of Germany, heavy rainfall is causing water levels in German rivers to surge. The Neiße in Görlitz has reached its highest level thus far, while Dresden's water level is approaching alarm stage 3, though it's not anticipated to rise any further. Saxony is experiencing an escalation in water levels due to relentless rain in the Czech Republic, Poland, and its own regions. Despite this, the Saxon flood control center anticipates that alarm stage 4 will not be surpassed in Dresden or at the Pegel Schöna on the Czech border. Görlitz's Neiße level has begun to decrease once more. In Bavaria, the flood situation remains relatively calm despite continuous rainfall.
On Sunday evening in Dresden, a high water warning stage 2 was declared. By Monday afternoon, the Elbe level had reached 5.67 meters (13.30 hrs). Alarm stage 3, with a threshold at six meters, may be surpassed by Tuesday evening, according to the flood control center. To prevent floodwater from entering the old town, mobile flood protection walls have already been set up in certain locations in the city.
At the Pegel in Saxon Schöna, just on the German-Czech border, the Elbe water level surpassed the threshold for alarm stage 3 on Monday morning. In Dresden and Schöna, a prolonged flood wave is predicted to start from Thursday.
The partially collapsed Carolabridge in Dresden underwent provisional clearance work on one side of the Elbe on Saturday evening. It was also crucial to prevent the bridge from obstructing the outflow of floodwater. Any further demolition work for the remaining collapsed bridge section can only commence post-flood.
In Görlitz, the highest level of the Neiße was initially at stage 3 on Monday morning but has since subsided. On Sunday evening, a 46-year-old woman unfortunate enough to approach the flood too closely fell into the Neiße. The swift-moving floodwaters carried her approximately a kilometer downstream before she managed to grab onto a weir and reach the bank. An ambulance was summoned, and the woman was transported to the hospital with symptoms of hypothermia.
The flood news service in Bavaria anticipates no additional deterioration in the flood situation in the region. The second-highest warning stage three may be attained for the Danube in Passau, while stages one and two are projected in all other areas. Rain is expected to cease in Bavaria on Tuesday, and while dry weather and minimal snowmelt are expected, the flood situation is predicted to improve further.
The Technical Relief Agency is prepared for possible future floods in eastern Germany. "We're gearing up to dispatch larger forces to the Elbe and the Oder," said THW department head Fritz-Helge Voss in the ZDF. He strongly advised individuals to stay away from water. In flood situations, people must not venture into the basement, as they could find themselves unable to escape.
"Anett", widely known internationally as "Boris", brought devastating rainfall and flooding to Poland, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Romania, resulting in numerous casualties.
Given the extreme weather conditions causing heavy rainfall in various regions, leading to surging water levels in German rivers, it's concerning that the Elbe level in Dresden may surpass alarm stage 3 by Tuesday evening, according to the flood control center. The swift-moving floodwaters in Görlitz posed a danger, as demonstrated by the incident where a woman had to fight against the current to survive.
