Higher own shares - Nursing home co-payments continue to rise - NRW leads the way

For care-dependent individuals in nursing homes, self-payable contributions have increased further. North Rhine-Westphalia is leading in this regard among the states. This is shown in an analysis by the Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds, which was obtained by the German Press Agency.

As of July 1st, the average monthly self-payment in a nursing home across Germany was 2,871 Euros from one's own pocket - 211 Euros more than in the middle of 2023. In North Rhine-Westphalia, it was even 3,200 Euros - 259 Euros more than a year ago. Following NRW are Baden-Württemberg (3,180 Euros) and Saarland (3,166 Euros) among the three most expensive states for nursing home residents.

Increase despite higher subsidies

The burdens continue to rise despite the introduction of relief grants in 2022, which will increase from January 1, 2024, and depend on the length of stay. With the highest subsidy from the fourth year of residence, the self-payment now averages 1,865 Euros per month nationwide. This was 91 Euros more than on July 1, 2023, according to the data.

In North Rhine-Westphalia, the average self-payment with subsidies after 36 months amounted to 2,226 Euros - 128 Euros more than at the beginning of July 2023. The reason for the increasing self-payment is mainly higher personnel costs for caregivers.

Training costs included for the first time

The cost for a nursing home place includes the self-payment for pure care and supervision. The health insurance fund, unlike the health insurance fund, only covers a portion of the costs. In addition, residents must pay for accommodation, food, and investments in the facilities themselves.

Training costs were included in the nursing home costs for the first time as of July 1st. This post was also included in the comparison values for July 1, 2023, as explained. The analysis was based on remuneration agreements between health insurance funds and nursing homes in all federal states. The Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds includes approximately the Techniker Health Insurance, Barmer, and DAK Health.
