Numerous traffic accidents again due to the onset of winter
Snow and black ice have once again caused numerous traffic accidents in Germany. In Middle Franconia in Bavaria, the police reported two major collisions involving vehicles. There were dozens of accidents in Siegerland in North Rhine-Westphalia and in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, with most road users escaping with only minor damage.
In the area of the Rostock police headquarters alone, there were almost a hundred traffic accidents from Tuesday to Wednesday. These occurred in the districts of Ludwigslust-Parchim, Nordwestmecklenburg, Rostock and the two independent cities of Rostock and Schwerin.
According to the police, most of the accidents resulted in property damage. However, one driver was seriously injured when he left the road in icy conditions between Gösslow and Neuenrode in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district and hit a tree. The man was taken to hospital in Hamburg by rescue helicopter.
On the A20 and A19 highways, there were considerable traffic delays after truck accidents in icy conditions. There were 22 accidents in black ice in the area of the Stralsund police station.
There were 37 black ice accidents in the Lübeck police district in Schleswig-Holstein. While most of the accidents were minor, a police patrol got into an accident situation while securing an accident on the A1 highway.
A car had skidded on the icy road, hit the central crash barrier and then collided with a patrol car securing the traffic. A lorry driving in parallel tried to swerve out of the way, but then collided with the police car and the second vehicle. Two policewomen and a passenger in the car were slightly injured.
Ten vehicles were involved in a pile-up in the district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen in central Franconia and five in the nearby district of Ansbach. Four road users were slightly injured in the collisions in the district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen, two of whom were taken to hospital.
The relentless snow and the appearance of black ice have been contributing factors to yet another wave of traffic accidents across Germany. Despite the almost hundred mishaps reported in the Rostock area alone, many drivers managed to escape with minor damages.
