Numerous public institutions were shut down.
During a prolonged heatwave in Greece, reaching highs of 40 degrees in some areas, numerous schools shuttered their doors on Wednesday. The Ministry of Labor encouraged employees to work remotely.
During the peak heat hours, from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, delivery services were instructed not to deliver food items such as pizzas. Additionally, the acclaimed tourist attraction, Acropolis, was requested to remain closed by the Ministry of Culture on that particular day.
The source of these intense temperatures can be traced back to hot air masses that have drifted in from North Africa. The extreme heat is expected to persist throughout Greece and Turkey until at least Friday, with Wednesday and Thursday experiencing the hottest temperatures. After that, rainfall in western Turkey could potentially provide some relief, as predicted by the Turkish Meteorological Service.
