Destructive fires - Numerous forest fires in the USA and Canada
In the USA and Canada, there are currently severe forest fires. According to the National Interagency Fire Center, in the USA alone, there are 79 active large fires. This covers an area of approximately 4,500 square kilometers - that's almost the size of Luxembourg.
The western part of the USA is particularly affected. In the state of Oregon, there are 31 large active forest fires, followed by California and Arizona, and other neighboring states. Firefighters are also battling a large fire in Alaska, which is partly located north of the Arctic Circle.
Canada is also fighting the flames
According to the responsible authority CIFFC, there are hundreds of smaller and larger forest fires in neighboring Canada. British Columbia province on the west coast and the eastern neighboring province Alberta are reportedly the most affected. A forest fire reached the town of Jasper in the same-named national park in the Rocky Mountains.
Damages have been reported in urban areas, according to the National Park's website. Firefighters are now working to protect as many buildings as possible. An evacuation order has been in effect for the entire park since Monday, affecting approximately 25,000 people according to the news website "Global News".
Last year, Canada was hit by forest fires to an unprecedented extent. Experts warn, in light of climate change, that fires will occur more frequently and have greater destructive power.
