Number of Palestinians killed in Gaza Strip rises to 18608
The number of Palestinians killed in the Gaza Strip has risen to 18,608 since the start of the war, according to the Hamas-controlled health authority. Almost 50,600 more people have been injured, said the authority's spokesman, Ashraf al-Kudra, on Wednesday. The latest death toll was 18,412.
The authority's figures cannot currently be verified, but the UN and other observers point out that they have proved to be generally credible in the past.
The Gaza war was triggered by the worst massacre in Israel's history, carried out by terrorists from the Islamist Hamas and other extremist groups on October 7 in Israel near the Gaza border. More than 1,200 people were killed on the Israeli side as a result, including at least 850 civilians.
