Number of new car registrations down in Germany

The number of new car registrations in Germany fell in November. The Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) announced on Tuesday that the drop amounted to 5.7 percent compared to the same period last year. New private registrations fell by a disproportionately high 8.6 percent. The declines were even more pronounced for electric and hybrid vehicles, at 22.5 and eleven percent respectively. For the year to date, however, the registration statistics show an overall increase of 11.4 percent.

Among German manufacturers, BMW recorded an increase of just under 16 percent in November. The Mini brand, which belongs to the Munich-based group, ranked second with an increase of around nine percent. At Volkswagen, the number of new registrations for the VW brand rose by one percent, while the number of new registrations for the sports car subsidiary Porsche fell by 17.5 percent. Mercedes also recorded double-digit percentage losses.

Among the import brands, Skoda recorded the strongest growth with an increase of around 41 percent. It was followed by Volvo and Seat, each with an increase of more than 20 percent. In contrast, new registrations of Tesla models fell by more than half. Fiat and Toyota suffered declines of 30 percent and more.
