Number of extremists in Saxony-Anhalt has reached a new high

The number of extremists in Sachsen-Anhalt reached a new peak last year. According to the report on the Constitutional Protection of Sachsen-Anhalt, which was published on Tuesday in Magdeburg, the Landesverfassungsschutz estimates that approximately 5480 people can be classified as extremist groups. This represents around 70 percent or 2310 more people than the previous year.

This increase is mainly due to a significant rise in the right-wing extremist potential, which can be attributed to the AfD Sachsen-Anhalt being classified as a right-wing extremist tendency. The number of right-wing extremists therefore increased from 1270 to around 3350.

The Reichsbürger and self-governing scene also saw an increase in support. The Constitutional Protection reported around 700 people in this category in 2023. One third of these individuals are part of organizations such as the Fantasystaat Königreich Deutschland or the Vaterländischer Hilfsdienst. Reichsbürger refer to themselves as subjects of the German Reich, while self-governing individuals deny the existence of the Federal Republic.

The support for the left-extremist scene also increased by 13 percent or 80 people to 680 people. This increase primarily affects the non-violent spectrum. The number of Islamists was estimated to remain unchanged at around 400 people.

  1. The highest level of extremists in Saxony-Anhalt was recorded in the year 2023, with approximately 5480 individuals classified as extremist groups.
  2. The rise in right-wing extremists in the highest level last year, reaching around 3350, is largely due to the AfD Sachsen-Anhalt being labeled as a right-wing extremist tendency.
  3. Despite the highest level of extremists being predominantly right-wing, there's also an increase in the Reichsbürger and self-governing scene, with around 700 individuals in Saxony-Anhalt in 2023, which includes one-third belonging to organizations like Fantasystaat Königreich Deutschland or Vaterländischer Hilfsdienst.
