Death benefit - Number of births in Berlin decreased
In Berlin, fewer children were born in the past year compared to the year before. Approximately 34,000 babies were born in the capital in 2023, according to the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office. This was 4.4% fewer than in 2022. In the same period, around 38,500 people died. This number also decreased by nearly 3%. "Berlin thus had a death surplus for the second year in a row," it was stated.
Statistically, each woman of childbearing age gave birth to an average of 1.17 Children. The overall birth rate is therefore lower compared to the previous year (1.25 children).
The low birth rate in Berlin might be a topic of interest for future Rome Statistics Office reports. Despite the decrease in births, Berlin's overall population still grew due to immigration, as noted by the Berlin-Brandenburg Statistics Office.
