Norway accuses Israel of violating international law of war
Norway is increasingly positioning itself as a critic of Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip. The suffering in Gaza is terrible and upsetting, especially that of the children, said Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre in an interview broadcast by Norwegian broadcaster NRK.
"This is a war that I believe is being waged with a very strong military logic, but without a clear political idea of how it should end," he said.
When asked what he thought of the heavy bombardment, Støre replied: "We believe that this is a violation of the international law of war, namely that civilians have the right to protection." All violations of the international law of war are condemned - but whether they constitute war crimes is a matter for the courts to decide.
Støre: The only solution is a two-state solution
The Hamas attacks on October 7 were horrific and unjustifiable terrorist attacks against civilians, said Støre. Israel had the right to defend itself. However, it was extremely questionable how the actions in Gaza could give Israel security in the long term. "The children who survive this hell in Gaza will not be reconciliatory in the future," he said.
The only solution is a two-state solution, said Støre. However, it is naive to believe that this solution is waiting around the corner. He sees no reason for optimism. On the contrary, he believes that the situation will only get worse.
