North Korea: Satellite successfully launched into space
According to North Korea, it has successfully launched a military reconnaissance satellite into space. According to the South Korean news agency Yonhap, the leadership in Pyongyang announced that the launch of a rocket with the satellite had been successful the previous day.
It said that further satellites would be launched into space within a short time. According to North Korea's state news agency KCNA, the "Malligyong-1" satellite was launched into space with the new "Chollima-1" rocket.
North Korea had failed twice this year in its attempt to launch a military reconnaissance satellite into orbit. The US government condemned the successful launch this time "in the strongest terms", according to North Korean statements. "This space launch used technology directly related to North Korea's intercontinental ballistic missile program," said the White House. North Korea must stop its "provocative actions" immediately.
According to experts, the technology of space rockets and long-range military missiles hardly differs. UN resolutions prohibit North Korea from launching ballistic missiles of any range. Depending on their design, such missiles can also be equipped with a nuclear warhead.
The success of the satellite launch has escalated ongoing conflicts between North Korea and international entities, particularly the United States. Due to the military nature of the satellite and the technology used, Kim Jong Un's regime faces renewed international criticism and calls to halt further military advancements.
