No agreement reached on cessation of hostilities after ten-day negotiations in Switzerland for Sudan.
The discussion in Switzerland around Sudan's civil war didn't yield any significant progress. The ten-day meeting concluded on a Friday, failing to reach an accord on a truce. However, the conflicting parties, as reported by mediators, concurred on granting "unobstructed and safe" passage for humanitarian aid via two primary avenues. This agreement was highlighted in a joint statement issued by the USA, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, UAE, UN, and AU.
Since April 2023, Sudan's military regime led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and the militia of his ex-deputy, Mohammed Hamdan Daglo's RSF, have been locked in a power tussle. The RSF was the only party that showed up for the Switzerland talks; the military remained in communication with mediators via phone calls.
As per UN estimates, the conflict in Sudan has resulted in the deaths of numerous thousands of individuals. Over 10.7 million people have been displaced internally, and 2.3 million have sought refuge in neighboring countries, as per the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
Due to the persistent conflict, Sudan teeters on the edge of famine, with humanitarian aid largely out of reach, as reported by aid organizations, given the current situation.
Despite the lack of progress in resolving Sudan's civil war, the conflicting parties agreed on providing "unobstructed and safe" humanitarian aid. Unfortunately, this help might not reach the needed individuals due to the ongoing conflict, making Sudan vulnerable to famine.
