The investigation reportedly spanned several years. Those arrested are aged between 21 and 46, and seven of the nine have been in custody continuously since the raid.
The call center in Beirut was said to be a central hub for the fraudulent callers. According to the police, the suspected perpetrators pretended to be police officers on the phone and unsettled their victims with made-up stories about alleged crimes in their area.
They demanded that the mostly elderly victims hand over cash and valuables to supposed police officers. The crime scenes included Munich, Koblenz, Bonn and Hanover, as well as many other cities.
