Cycling - Niedermaier finishes Giro d'Italia in sixth place
U23 World Champion Antonia Niedermaier finished the Giro d'Italia Women's race in a strong sixth place. The 21-year-old from Rosenheim had a deficit of 2:41 minutes to Italian overall winner Elisa Longo Borghini. The second and third places were taken by World Champion Lotte Kopecky from Belgium and the Australian Neve Bradbury.
On the last stage of 117 kilometers from Pescara to L'Aquila, German Champion Franziska Koch finished in third place. Kimberley Pienaar from Mauritius won the race.
Niedermaier is one of the great talents in German Cycling. At the 2023 World Championships in Glasgow, she won the U23 Time Trial title.
Last year's Giro d'Italia did not leave good memories for Niedermaier. She had to abandon the race due to a facial injury when she was involved in a crash caused by Tadej Pogacar's friend Urska Zigart.
Despite her strong performance in the Giro d'Italia Women's race, Antonia Niedermaier is eager to improve, as she missed an opportunity to challenge for the overall victory in Italy last year due to an unfortunate incident. Germany's rising cycling star, Niedermaier, will look to test her skills once again in major competitions, aiming to make a mark in the cycling scene, possibly inspiring more women to participate in the sport.
