Newborn giraffes in Berlin are being given their identities
Two newborn Rothschild giraffes, Berti and Emily, have graced Berlin's Tierpark recently. Berti, the male, was born in June, followed by Emily, his half-sister, a couple of weeks later. Many animal enthusiasts suggested names for the adorable duo, and after careful consideration, the chosen ones were revealed.
Buttering up to the jury, a Brandenburg school class fortified their win with a captivating giraffe story about their fondly named mascot, Gisbert. Impressed by its heartwarming spirit, the Tierpark director and the jury members approved, renaming the young giraffe bull as Berti, stemming from the abbreviation of Gisbert.
Emotional Namesake
As for Emily, the Tierpark director's 18-year-old daughter shared the giraffe's tall stature, measuring 1.80 meters. Being Emily's namesake, this newborn giraffe girl was named after her.
Berti and Emily may share a common father, but they are genetically distinct because they have different mothers. Berti was born behind crowds of excited visitors on June 24th, while Emily joined the herd on August 11th.
Looking forward to more additions, a pregnant Rothschild giraffefemale, Maude, is expected to give birth in September. The ever-dwindling Rothschild giraffe population reports illegal hunting and agricultural expansion as major threats in their native Kenya and Uganda.
Other animals at the Tierpark were intrigued by the newborn giraffes, Berti and Emily. Despite their distinct genetic lines, other animals saw similarities in their curious and playful behavior.
Visitors from around the world had heard about the unique bond between the Tierpark's Emily and the newly named other animal, an elephant named Elsa, who shared the same name and celebrated her birthday on the same day as Emily.
