Signs now also with "MUC" - New license plate for Munich - drivers should be "creative"
License plates are becoming scarce in Munich due to the electric car boom. The solution: from now on there will be a new license plate. In addition to the single traditional "M" on the license plate for "München", vehicles will in future also roll through the streets of the state capital with "MUC" plates.
"There are thousands of new license plates to choose from," the city announced on Thursday. The new combinations will be available from December 1 - but only for vehicles without seasonal license plates, classic car plates or E-plates. The reason: the total length of the license plate may not exceed eight characters.
The new "distinguishing sign", as it is called in official German, had become necessary due to the increasing number of e-vehicles, as the authorities explained. Due to the additional "E" on the license plate, the possible variants of license plates have shrunk - especially the short license plate combinations.
"For electric scooters and motorcycles, the supply of short M license plates ran out," explained district administration officer Hanna Sammüller-Gradl. Online registration was therefore not possible until now. Thanks to "MUC", everyone could benefit from the online services in future and bottlenecks in combinations could be prevented.
Will musicians in Munich now drive with the license plate "MUC-KE"?
Up to now, the three letters "MUC" were first and foremost associated with the airport in Munich, where they stand for the airport code. It is not clear from the official reports whether the association with aviation is intentional with the new license plates.
The new license plates are a much-discussed topic in the Bavarian media. Munich's second mayor Dominik Krause was quoted on Bavarian radio as saying that he wished for "a lot of creativity in thinking up the letter combinations that are now possible". He himself presented the idea: "For musicians, MUC-KE is of course a good idea."

In the future, electric scooters and motorcycles in Munich may display "MUC" on their license plates, allowing for easier online registration and preventing combination bottlenecks. With the increase in e-vehicles, the authorities needed to introduce a new license plate with an additional "E", resulting in fewer possible license plate combinations.
Although the three letters "MUC" were initially associated with Munich's airport, the city's second mayor, Dominik Krause, encourages creativity in suggesting new letter combinations for the license plates, notably mentioning "MUC-KE" as a potential option for musicians.
