Universities - New canteen for the University Erfurt

The University of Erfurt is currently one of the largest and most expensive construction and renovation projects in the state of Thuringia. In addition to six major construction projects and a series of smaller initiatives, a new Mensa building is now being added, according to a statement from the Ministry of Science and Building in Erfurt. Science State Secretary Carsten Feller handed over a funding decision today in the amount of approximately 24.7 million Euro.

"The success of a study significantly depends on the framework conditions at the study location," said Feller. With the new Mensa building, the food supply will further improve. According to the information, 6000 people will be served daily. The old Mensa building, which will continue to be operated until the completion of the new building, is in urgent need of renovation. The new Mensa is expected to open at the beginning of the winter semester 2028/29.

Currently, the energy renovation of the Sports Hall is underway - the university sports association has been using alternative sports facilities for several years. Work is now underway on the interior. The building is expected to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2024, with commissioning scheduled for early 2025. The Ministry of Building estimates the costs for the Sports Hall alone at 9.8 million Euro at present. The money comes from the Federal Government, the State, and the EU.

Money from the state budget for Audimax

Preparations are underway for a major renovation of the Audimax - the largest lecture hall on the university campus. The tender should take place this year; the construction start is planned for the last quarter of 2025. The financing will be through the state budget.

Work on improving fire protection and repairing moisture damage in a teaching building will be completed in 2024. Costs of around three million Euro are budgeted for this.

10.1 million Euro are earmarked for the maintenance and modernization of a building for university employees. The construction is planned to begin next year. Among the smaller projects, according to the Ministry, a solar panel system on a teaching building is planned.

The Mensa-Neubau marks an important step in the modernization of the social university infrastructure, according to the university political spokesman of the Left-Landtagsfraktion, Christian Schaft. In the past ten years, more than 600 million Euro have been invested in university construction in Thuringia. Currently, there are still 30 construction and renovation projects with a total volume of 401 million Euro in progress, as answers to a query from Schaft show.

The new Mensa building, part of the University Erfurt, is being funded with approximately 24.7 million Euro and is expected to open at the beginning of the winter semester 2028/29, alleviating the urgent need for renovation of the current Mensa building. The Sports Hall, used by the university sports association, is currently undergoing an energy renovation, with an estimated cost of 9.8 million Euro from the Federal Government, the State, and the EU. These construction and renovation projects are part of the larger investment of over 600 million Euro in university construction in Erfurt, Thuringia, over the past decade.
