Final Decision - Netherlands: A 28-year sentence for the homicide of journalist de Vries

In Amsterdam, a court has convicted three individuals for the murder of renowned Dutch crime reporter Peter R. de Vries and sentenced them to lengthy prison terms. Approximately three years after the crime in Amsterdam, four other defendants were also found guilty of aiding and abetting the murder and were given sentences of up to 14 years in prison. However, two individuals were cleared of all charges.

The guilt of the three main culprits was undeniable, as they showed no regard for human life, according to the presiding judges in the highly secure courtroom. The prosecution had requested life sentences for the convicts.

The crime occurred in the summer of 2021 when the 64-year-old reporter was shot in the heart of Amsterdam. He sadly passed away due to his severe injuries. The incident left the nation stunned. Just after the incident, two key suspects were taken into custody: the shooter, Delano G. (24), and the driver of the getaway car, Kamil E. (38). Both are expected to serve 28 years in prison.

Krystian M. (29), known as a "murder broker," received a 26-year prison sentence. M. was the only individual to acknowledge his crimes and apologize to the deceased's family.

The defendants remained silent throughout the trial and refused to testify. They have the right to appeal the verdicts as well.

The Taghi drug gang is suspected of carrying out the murder, as de Vries was close friends with a state witness who had provided evidence in a significant trial against Taghi and his associates. Prior to this incident, the brother and attorney of the state witness had been killed. Nevertheless, there is no conclusive proof linking the Taghi gang to the murder. Taghi was sentenced to life in prison in February, but he was guilty of other murders.
