Netflix data traffic reduced by European Championship soccer broadcasts
The public-attracting football European Championship matches during primetime apparently come at the expense of streaming entertainment, as suggested by numbers published by mobile carrier Vodafone on Thursday in Düsseldorf.
The company analyzed the Netflix data traffic in its mobile network simultaneously with the football broadcasts of the EM. According to their findings, the Netflix traffic in the Vodafone network during the opening match Germany - Scotland on June 14th decreased by approximately 40% compared to normal days.
The match Germany - Switzerland on June 23rd reportedly caused a 35% decrease in Netflix traffic. The match Germany – Hungary on June 19th allegedly led to a 20% decrease, and several other evenings without Germany involvement reportedly drew viewers of Netflix to primetime, causing its data traffic to decrease by up to 15% during the best broadcasting hours.
However, according to Vodafone, there are no fluctuations during afternoon games, and the EM does not affect the 18:00 matches, except when Germany is playing.
Vodafone is one of the leading mobile carriers in Germany.
During the European Championship, the company Vodafone analyzed the decrease in Netflix traffic and found that primetime matches, such as Germany - Scotland, Germany - Switzerland, and Germany – Hungary, led to significant reductions in Netflix data traffic by approximately 40%, 35%, and 20%, respectively. Additionally, on evenings without Germany involvement, Netflix traffic decreased by up to 15% during prime broadcasting hours, indicating that football broadcasts on Vodafone impact Netflix data traffic analysis, particularly when Germany is playing.
