Netanyahu examines Hamas idea for ceasefire
For the past nine months, Israel has been at war with Hamas - the government is now considering a proposal from the terrorist organization regarding a ceasefire and the release of Israeli hostages. The UN, meanwhile, estimates the number of displaced people in the Gaza Strip.
Israel is currently engaged in a proposal from the radical Islamic terrorist organization Hamas for the release of hostages and a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip. This information came from a statement by the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad, which was released by the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The Hamas confirmed in a separate statement that the Hamas leader living in Qatar, Ismail Haniyeh, had spoken with mediators in Qatar and Egypt about the ideas of the militant Palestinian group. The goal is to achieve an agreement to end the nine-month-long war.
Mediators, including Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, have been working for months to achieve a ceasefire and the release of the remaining 120 hostages in Gaza. The Hamas is demanding an end to the war and a full Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip, while Israel is only willing to agree to temporary truces.
Biden-Plan calls for withdrawal in two phases
The ceasefire plan announced by US President Joe Biden at the end of May calls for the gradual release of Israeli hostages in Gaza and the withdrawal of Israeli forces in two phases. In a third phase, Palestinian prisoners are to be released, the Gaza Strip is to be rebuilt, and the remains of the killed hostages are to be returned.
According to UN estimates, since the start of the war between Israel, at least nine out of ten people in the Gaza Strip have been displaced at least once. Andrea De Domenico from the UN Office for Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said on Wednesday, "We estimate that nine out of ten people in the Gaza Strip have been displaced at least once, if not up to ten times, since October."
In response to the Hamas massacre on October 7, which resulted in hundreds of deaths, Israel has been conducting massive military operations in the Gaza Strip since then. The stated goal of the Israeli government is the destruction of Hamas and the release of the hostages.
The ceasefire proposal by Hamas includes the release of Israeli hostages, a topic brought forth by the Israeli intelligence agency Mossad and endorsed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Terrorist attacks have continued in the Gaza Strip during this nine-month-long conflict between Israel and Hamas, raising concerns about the safety of the hostages. Despite these challenges, mediators are pushing for a lasting resolution, including the potential involvement of US President Joe Biden's plan for a phased withdrawal.
Nevertheless, Hamas is demanding a complete end to the war and an Israeli withdrawal from the Gaza Strip as part of the ceasefire negotiations. Israel, on the other hand, is only prepared to agree to temporary truces and has faced criticism for its military operations in the Gaza Strip, which have resulted in a significant displacement of Palestinians. According to UN estimates, over 90% of the population in the Gaza Strip has been displaced at least once due to these conflicts.
