Nearly 50% of Chinese direct investment in Europe is directed towards Hungary.

Approximately half of the Chinese direct investments in Europe for the previous year flowed into Hungary, as reported by the Mercator Institute for China Studies (Merics) and the Rhodium Group. The study revealed that Hungary received 44% of these investments. According to the report, "Hungary received more Chinese investments than the combined investments from Germany, France, and Britain."

Majority of Chinese investments in Hungary went toward the electric mobility sector, making up nearly two-thirds (69%) of China's direct investments in Europe last year. The healthcare industry in Europe also caught the interest of Chinese investors, and particularly those in the medical equipment sector. The study reports that from 2021 to 2023, two-thirds of all Chinese investments were dedicated to medical devices.

Chinese investments in Europe settled at their lowest level since 2010 at 6.8 billion euros for last year. Merics' Chief Economist Max Zenglein commented, "Chinese greenfield projects in Europe are a positive development, but the overall decline in investments suggests an imbalance in economic relations."
