Naval mine cooperation between Germany and NATO partners signed
Germany and five additional NATO partners from the Baltic Sea region aim to build up cooperation in the procurement of sea mines as a deterrent weapon. Government representatives signed an intentional declaration on Tuesday in Washington before the NATO summit with the goal of jointly purchasing and keeping the systems deployment-ready across their forces.
"They are a very effective way to deter an aggressor at sea, and they are an extremely important capability in the face of Russian aggression," said Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD) at the meeting. And: "Procurement is deterrence." A Finnish sea mine system is mentioned in the cooperation. Besides Germany, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Poland, and Sweden are involved.
"Germany's defense minister underscored the importance of sea mines as a deterrent weapon against Russian aggression, emphasizing that procurement is a key aspect of deterrence. The six NATO partners, including Germany, are collaborating to jointly acquire and maintain sea mine systems, with Finland providing a system for this cooperation."
