NATO seeks to avoid stationing troops in Ukrainian land.
According to NATO's Secretary General, Jens Stoltenberg, the military alliance has no plans to send troops to Ukraine and sees no immediate threat against any of its member states. Stoltenberg made these remarks during a trip to the Finnish capital, Helsinki, on Thursday.
During his visit to Finland, where the country became a NATO member in April 2023, Stoltenberg also downplayed the notion of an impending war. The NATO is working towards a long-term financial commitment from its allies to help Ukraine for as long as needed, he said. The support to Ukraine faced some delays and shortcomings in the past months, and Stoltenberg emphasized the importance of ensuring this doesn't happen again.
The NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Christopher Cavoli, voiced the need for NATO member states to increase their arms production. Speaking during the 80th anniversary of the Allied landing in Normandy, Cavoli said, "We need to produce more, we need to expand our industrial base." He further added that all NATO members are aware of this issue and are taking steps to address it.
The NATO is preparing to protect the territory of its member states and has been redistributing its focus in recent times. "We used to have deployments outside the NATO area; now we're focusing on defending our own territory," Cavoli explained. In addition, the alliance will train its soldiers in the technology and tactics employed on the Ukrainian battleground by establishing a dedicated center in Poland.
