Nancy Faeser advocates for more stringent European regulations on expulsions.

Minister of Interior for Germany, Nancy Faeser, advocates for reinforced European expulsion regulations. She believes the EU Returns Directive needs an immediate overhaul, stating it frequently fails in practice during a chat with EU colleagues in Luxembourg on Thursday. Faeser expressed, "It needs to be more applicable in everyday situations."

She underlined the issue of border rejections, suggesting the necessity of striking deals with third countries to establish an "authentic, efficient return system."

17 Schengen nations have penned a letter to the EU Commission, urging a revision of the 2008 deportation regulations. Germany has joined the efforts led by Austria and the Netherlands.

Faeser showed reservation towards the demands from Hungary and Italy to negotiate supposed "return centers" in third nations to block migrants from even entering the European Union. Faeser pointed out that a cooperative nation would be essential for this, which she labeled as the "most challenging aspect." Her department is currently considering the matter.

Italy had reached an arrangement regarding asylum camps with EU prospective member, Albania. The establishment of more such facilities on the Western Balkans is under debate.

In her discussion with EU colleagues, Faeser emphasized the need for a more versatile application of the European expulsion regulations beyond the EU Returns Directive's current limitations. The "Other" EU countries should consider revising their deportation regulations, as suggested by the 17 Schengen nations in their letter to the EU Commission.
