New funding program - Municipalities should adapt better to climate change

Saxony-Anhalt's municipalities will be supported in adapting to climate change. The Environment Ministry initiated this for the "Saxony-Anhalt Climate III" funding program. According to Minister Armin Willingmann's announcement in Magdeburg, 35 million Euro are available. These funds come from the European Regional Development Fund. Applications can be submitted at the Investment Bank Saxony-Anhalt starting from now.

Minister Willingmann emphasized: "The latest winter flood in 2023/2024, the dry summers in 2018 and the following years, as well as the extreme floods in 2002 and 2013, clearly show: The climate is changing not only somewhere in the world but also directly in front of our doorstep."

More Green on Roofs, Walls, and Streets

The program provides approximately funding for municipalities to create climate analyses and heat action plans. However, funding is also provided for cities and communities to seal areas, green areas, and provide more shade. More green on roofs, walls, and streets is also desired, as well as more climate-adapted shrub and tree species. And funds are also provided for protection against heavy rain and flooding.

In a first round, where 23.5 million Euro are to be distributed initially, applications can be submitted until October 18, 2022. A further funding call should start at the end of 2024.
