Munich Airport resumes operations
After a six-hour interruption due to the forecast of freezing rain, Munich Airport resumed operations on Tuesday. The first Lufthansa plane from New York landed at 12.00 noon, according to a spokesman. Air traffic should now gradually resume. There had been no take-offs and landings since the start of operations at 6.00 am. The airport had already announced the interruption to air traffic on Monday evening with reference to the forecast freezing rain.
According to the information, passengers in Munich must continue to expect "massive restrictions". Around 100 of the 770 take-offs and landings originally planned for Tuesday are still expected in the afternoon, the spokesperson said.
The northern part of the airport in particular had been heavily affected by icy rain. The winter services had had to remove a thick layer of ice with great effort. The decision to temporarily suspend operations due to the forecast freezing rain was necessary for safety reasons.
Hundreds of travelers were still stranded at Munich Airport on Tuesday. They were being provided with food and drink. Camp beds were also available. Heavy snowfall in large parts of Bavaria had already severely disrupted operations at the airport over the weekend.
