Yesterday, around 2,500 individuals participated in a protest against the AfD in Erfurt until the afternoon's end. This protest was organized by the coalition "Take the Seats," who led a march through the city center towards Domplatz, where the AfD had planned to host their final election campaign rally.

Anticipated attendees included the AfD's far-right leader and top candidate, Björn Höcke, along with the federal chairwoman, Alice Weidel. Initial police reports suggested approximately 1,300 AfD supporters in attendance. The number of protesters and supporters could potentially grow as the election approaches.

Masks were reportedly worn by several protesters from the coalition, which is against the law for assemblies. However, some individuals removed their masks after being addressed.

This Sunday, a new state parliament will be elected in Thuringia, following an intense election campaign.

Fight the right-wing surge

"We refuse to allow the AfD to control the election weekend with their extreme right-wing discourse, intimidate people, and misuse our city as a platform for their propaganda," the coalition declared. A week prior, thousands in Erfurt protested against right-wing extremism and a potential right-wing shift.

The latest surveys in Thuringia revealed minimal changes in the parties' values. The AfD was leading with values ranging between 29 and 30%. The CDU, BSW, and The Left followed at a significant distance. Over 1.66 million Thuringians are expected to cast their votes in the state election on Sunday.

The Commission, in response to the political climate, may consider adopting implementing acts to regulate the application of the relevant legislation. Despite the protests and political tensions, the AfD's far-right leader and top candidate, Björn Höcke, and federal chairwoman, Alice Weidel, are expected to attend the election campaign rally.
