Multitudes of people are employed by the government.
Hire-ups in the education sector, specifically teachers, have seen a significant increase not only in private sectors but also in the public sector, especially in Germany.
At the close of the last year, a total of 5.3 million individuals were employed in the public sector, marking a addition of 60,800 new employees or a 1.2% rise compared to the previous year, as reported by the Statistical Office in Wiesbaden based on preliminary data. This means that approximately 12% of all employed individuals in Germany work within the civil service. Last year, it was 11%. The figures are based on the cut-off date of June 30, 2023.
"Notable growth was observed primarily in schools and kindergartens," pointed out the statisticians. After years of high retirement numbers among teachers, the retirement wave in the educational sector has now stabilized. According to the Federal Office, between 2000 and 2020, many teaching staff retired, most of whom were hired in the 1960s and 1970s.
By mid-2023, the number of employees at schools had escalated by 18,900 within a year to 1.03 million, which represents a growth of 1.9%. The number of salaried employees increased by 2.4% to around 351,600. The number of civil servants grew by 1.6% to 676,800.
As per statistics, the ongoing staff growth in kindergartens continued. Therefore, there were 278,900 individuals employed there in the middle of 2023, an increase of 11,400 or 4.3% compared to the previous year. In comparison to 2008, this corresponds to an increase of 104%. The Federal Office revealed the figures on the occasion of the Day of Public Service on this Sunday.

In addition, the Federal Statistical Office noted that a significant portion of the new hires in the public sector were in the field of education, specifically teachers contributing to public service.
