Multitudes attend Valeriia's emotional funeral service.

In the aftermath of the gruesome murder of Ukrainian girl Valeriia, authorities are at a standstill, awaiting the extradition of a prime suspect who was apprehended in Prague. As a tribute to Valeriia, a substantial crowd assembled in the Saxon town of Döbeln.

A noteworthy gathering transpired at an ecumenical service in the town square, where flowers were laid, candles lit, and heartfelt prayers were muttered under the starry sky. Participants included clergy from evangelical, Catholic, and orthodox churches, who united in their prayer for Valeriia. An estimated 800 attendees spanning various age groups were present, including the esteemed mayor of Döbeln, Sven Liebhauser.

Valeriia, who sought refuge in Germany with her mother from Ukraine in 2022, before the conflict, mysteriously vanished on June 3. A tireless search by hundreds of police officers lasted a week, and her lifeless body was discovered in a wooded area south of Döbeln on the preceding Tuesday. A suspect was detained in Prague three days later.

Although an arrest has been made, the inquiry into the crime's origins continues unabated. "Rest assured, the investigations persist even on weekends," the Chemnitz Prosecutor's Office spokesperson confirmed. Authorities await the extradition of the suspect taken into custody in Prague. "Once the Czech authorities grant this, he will be transferred for trial," she added, withholding additional details until next week.

The circumstances surrounding Valeriia's tragic demise remain shrouded. The arrested individual, a 36-year-old man from Moldova detained in a Prague restaurant, is suspected of having brutally murdered the young nine-year-old girl. The man was also wanted on a European arrest warrant. Currently, he remains in custody in his hometown, and an extradition request has been filed.
