Ukraine War - Moscowtarget of drone attack for first time in a long while
With nighttime drone attacks between Russia and Ukraine targeting Moscow again, the Russian capital is once again a target. The incident was reportedly uneventful, with the drone being shot down south of Moscow near the small town of Stupino, according to Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin's Telegram channel.
Moscow, some 700 kilometers from the border, is rarely in the crosshairs of Ukrainian drones. The last reported attempt was a month ago, and there have been incidents primarily in the summer, including an attack on the Moscow City business center. Since then, the air defense around Moscow has been significantly strengthened.
Other cities under fire
There were no reported damages in the latest attack - unlike other Russian regions, which have also been under attack. The worst affected was reportedly the region near the Ukraine border, Belgorod. According to local authorities, a man was killed by a drone strike on a car in a village.
In the border town of Shebekino, seven people were injured due to gunfire, according to Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov. Most of the victims reportedly suffered shrapnel wounds.
Ukraine sends drones to Russia regularly
The Ukraine frequently targets objects crucial to the Russian military command, such as fuel depots or military airfields. For instance, the tank farm in the Volgograd region had to halt operations for approximately three months following a drone attack two days ago. The Russian military, however, consistently claims to have shot down all drones, while important installations continue to burn. Even Kremlin propagandist Vladimir Solovyov has recently expressed concern over false success reports.
Ukraine has been defending itself against Russian invasion for two years. Due to a lack of heavy long-range weapons, it attempts to compensate for this deficiency through targeted drone attacks. The damages and casualties, however, do not compare to the devastating consequences of Russian bombardments on Ukraine. Over 30 people were killed in the capital Kiev alone in a rocket attack on Monday.
- Despite the escalating drone attacks between Russia and Ukraine, Moscow has managed to fend off most attempts, as evidenced by Mayor Sergej Sobjanin's statement about a recent attack being successfully intercepted south of the city.
- The latest conflict between Russia and Ukraine involved a drone attack on Moscow, but unlike other Russian regions like Belgorod, which have suffered significant damage and casualties, the incident in the Russian capital was relatively minor.
- While Ukraine frequently sends drones to target important Russian military installations, such as fuel depots and airfields, Russian officials consistently claim to have shot down all drones, suggesting that some drone attacks may be successfully carrying out their missions despite these countermeasures.
- Conflicts between Russia and Ukraine have resulted in drone attacks on both sides, with Ukraine often using drones to compensate for a lack of heavy long-range weapons, while Russia has strengthened its air defense around Moscow to prevent such attacks from causing significant damage to the city.
