Moscow reports five dead in Ukrainian attack and capture of another village
In a Ukrainian drone attack, according to Russian reports, five people were killed in a border-near Russian village. The governor of the western Russian region of Kursk, Alexey Smirnov, announced this on Telegram on Saturday. "Two more family members are in a critical condition," he added. The Ukrainian drone reportedly crashed into a house in the small village of Gorodischtsche.
Since the beginning of Russia's offensive in Ukraine, both sides have regularly targeted each other with drones, some of which have ranges of several hundred kilometers. The Ukrainian army has expanded its drone attacks on Russian territories this year. It targets not only Russian energy facilities but also border towns and villages.
Russia began a large-scale land offensive in the northeastern Ukrainian region of Kharkiv in May. According to Russian President Vladimir Putin, this was to create a "buffer zone" to protect the Russian border region of Belgorod from Ukrainian attacks. The region of Kursk lies further north, across the Ukrainian region of Sumy, which is controlled by Kiev.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported the capture of another village in eastern Ukraine on Saturday. The Russian troops had taken control of the settlement of Schumi in the Donetsk region and improved their "tactical position," the ministry stated. Schumi is less than ten kilometers east of the city of Torezk, which the Russian forces have been advancing towards for weeks. Torezk, in turn, is northwest of the city of Gorliwka, which has been under separatist control since 2014.
