- Moscow confirms fighting in Kursk region
In the wake of heavy Ukrainian attacks on the Russian border region of Kursk, the Ministry of Defense in Moscow has confirmed reports of ongoing combat operations in the area. "The operation to destroy the formations of the Ukrainian Armed Forces is continuing," the ministry stated. Clashes have been reported in border towns on Russian territory against Ukrainian infiltrators.
The day before, the Ministry of Defense had claimed that an attempt to breach the border had failed. Now, it was reported that a deep incursion into Russian territory had been prevented.
Previously, Russian military bloggers had reported that Ukrainian fighters had advanced at least ten kilometers into Kursk region. According to the Ministry of Defense in Moscow, soldiers are now fighting alongside border guards in the area against the infiltrators, with the support of aircraft, missile forces, and artillery. They claim to have destroyed enemy formations, with the enemy losing at least 260 personnel and 50 units of equipment, including 7 tanks. These figures could not be independently verified.
According to Russian authorities, thousands of people fled the shelled towns, with several deaths and over 20 injured. There has been no official response from Ukraine so far. Ukraine has repeatedly attacked targets in the neighboring country as part of its defensive campaign against the Russian invasion.
The ongoing conflict has led to a significant increase in the area under military operation in the Kursk region. Despite previous failures, Ukrainian forces have managed to infiltrate deep into Russian territory, prompting intense combat in certain border areas.
