Moscow allegedly counts more German asylum seekers
According to Moscow, more than 100 German citizens have applied for temporary protection in Russia this year. The spokeswoman for the Russian Interior Ministry in Moscow cited a figure of 111 German applicants in the first nine months. This is several times the number for 2022.
There were also 84 applications for temporary protection from the Baltic states, spokeswoman Irina Wolk told the Interfax agency. The information could not be independently verified; there are occasional reports in the press about Germans moving to Russia.
The Ministry of the Interior cited the fear of alleged political persecution in Germany or the Baltic states as the reason for this. People feel persecuted because they support Russia's policies or the special military operation in Ukraine, said Wolk. This is the official Russian term for Moscow's war of aggression against the neighboring country.
Those seeking protection also felt harassed if they supported Moscow's advocacy of Russian language, culture and so-called traditional values. This refers to the advocacy of a traditional family image and the strict rejection of non-heterosexual relationships. Germany and the Baltic states are considered hostile in Russia because they support Ukraine.
