Theater - More visitors in the Mecklenburg State Theatre
The Mecklenburg State Theatre counted 138,000 visitors in the previous theatre season, which is approximately 6,000 more than the previous year. The Six-Genre House with theatres in Schwerin and Parchim offered a wide range of productions and concerts, reaching many people, reported General Intendant Hans-Georg Wegner. The theatre was also able to draw international attention with the opera performance "Sancta" by Florentina Holzinger, which was shown at the Vienna Festwochen.
Summer Play a Misstep
The annual summer play in the courtyard of Schwerin Castle fell short of expectations, as reported. The unstable weather contributed to this. However, the play selection, a production of Molière's "Tartuffe," is also being critically assessed in retrospect. "We didn't have a good hand in the selection, the play didn't pull in the crowds," Wegner told the "Schweriner Volkszeitung." For the summer of 2025, two open-air productions are planned: the operetta "The Merry Widow" by Franz Lehár and the play "Merlin" by Tankred Dorst.
In Schwerin, the theatre season of the State Theatre ended last weekend with two concerts of the Mecklenburg State Orchestra on the open-air stage and the last theatre performances in the castle courtyard. In the Cultural Mill Parchim, performances are reportedly still being played until August 3rd.
New Season Begins with Premiere
The new season is scheduled to begin on August 31st in Schwerin with the premiere of a one-act play titled "Luise," named after Fritz Reuter's wife. The German-language stage of the State Theatre is named after Fritz Reuter.
The State Theatre in Schwerin, located in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, is not only known for its high visitor numbers but also its international collaborations. As mentioned, the opera performance "Sancta" by Florentina Holzinger was showcased at the Vienna Festwochen.
Despite some challenges in the past, such as the underperforming summer play of Molière's "Tartuffe" in Schwerin Castle's courtyard, the State Theatre continues its operations. In fact, preparations for the summer of 2025 include two open-air productions: "The Merry Widow" by Franz Lehár and "Merlin" by Tankred Dorst.
The Theatre in Parchim, part of the Six-Genre House, is still holding performances until August 3rd, demonstrating the rich cultural scene in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
