More than half of the people in Germany have never listened to a podcast
More than half of the people in Germany have never listened to a Podcast. This is according to the latest representative survey, Audio II of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Media-Analyse (Agma), which was published in Frankfurt. According to this survey, 43.9 percent of people have used a Podcast offering before, a slight increase from the last survey, Audio I of 2024, which was published in the spring (41.8 percent).
A Podcast is a contribution to listening, which is offered as an audio file on the internet for downloading or streaming. It can be a radio reportage, a casual conversation on a fixed topic, or even a search for real crimes. The first Podcast offerings emerged around 20 years ago, and they have become increasingly popular over the past 10 years.
The acceptance of this digital audio offering is often related to age, as shown by this figure: In the target group of 14- to 49-year-olds, significantly more people - 59.8 percent - have listened to a Podcast before (Audio I 2024: 57.0 percent).
In an average household of an Ottonormal consumer, there are three radio receivers (exactly there are 3.25 devices on average including car radios). However, many citizens are well-prepared for a digital future. In 34 percent of German households, a DAB+ radio receiver is available, and in 14 percent of households, even a hybrid receiver is available for the reception of DAB+ as well as WLAN-Radio.
Despite the surge in Podcast popularity globally, half of the German population remains untouched by this digital audio format, as indicated by the agma-Analysis. This trend was further explored in the latest survey, Audio II, published in Frankfurt. Embracing Podcasts is more prevalent among younger generations in Germany; according to the same survey, 59.8% of 14- to 49-year-olds have listened to a Podcast before.
The acceptance of audio content within the German society has significantly evolved over time. While only half of the population has experimented with Podcasts, a substantial portion of households now own DAB+ and hybrid radio receivers, enabling both traditional and digital radio services.
In the wake of the growing popularity of Podcasts worldwide, the agma-Analysis highlights that Germany still appears to lag behind, with only 43.9% of people having consumed Podcasts before, resulting in a smaller portion of the population being exposed to this innovative audio format compared to other countries.
