Aviation - More space for more aviation research in Hamburg
The Center for Applied Aviation Research (ZAL) in Hamburg-Finkenwerder now offers its researchers 30 percent more space. Hamburg Mayor Peter Tschentscher (SPD) dedicated the completed annex to the researchers on a Wednesday and handed over the new research facilities to the German Aerospace Center (DLR).
The two DLR institutes for "Maintenance and Modifications" and "System Architectures in Aviation" will occupy approximately two-thirds of the new facilities, according to ZAL. "They bring their core competencies of maintenance and digitalization for climate-friendly aviation into the research network," it was stated. The lease agreement with DLR lasts for 25 years. The remaining research facilities of the 8,000 square meter expansion are intended for technology partners who want to use the ZAL infrastructure for shorter periods and project-related research work.
"The expansion of ZAL creates additional capacities for innovations 'made in Hamburg' and strengthens the on-site institutes of the German Aerospace Center," said Tschentscher. Anke Kaysser-Pyzalla, Chairman of the DLR Executive Board, said: "In new labs, we will research intensively on climate-friendly flying with all its systemic connections."
More than 30 industrial and scientific partners work on 34,000 square meters under one roof in ZAL – among them Airbus, Lufthansa Technik, Diehl Aviation, Dassault Systèmes, the German Aerospace Center (DLR), Fraunhofer, and the Hamburg universities. With around 850 researchers, they work on topics such as robotics and automation, digitalization, cabin acoustics, and smart cabin layout. In addition, sustainability goals in aviation are to be advanced.
- The German Aerospace Center (DLR), known for its expertise in Air traffic and Research, will occupy a significant portion of the expanded ZAL facilities in Hamburg-Finkenwerder.
- Mayor Peter Tschentscher, representing the SPD in Hamburg, celebrated the completion of the DLR's new research facilities and commended the focus on Digitization and SPD's role in aviation.
- The DLR institutes for "Maintenance and Modifications" and "System Architectures in Aviation" will utilize the new facilities to further their research into climate-friendly aviation and digitalization, as per the 25-year lease agreement.
- The expansion of ZAL, including the addition of DLR's research facilities, has been lauded by Germany's aviation sector, with industry and scientific partners like Airbus, Lufthansa Technik, and DLR focusing on sustainability goals in aviation.
- As part of the ZAL network in Hamburg, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) will conduct comprehensive research on climate-friendly flying, utilizing advanced technology and integrating digitization to enhance Germany's position as a world leader in Aviation.
