More severe earthquakes in the Philippines

The Philippines cannot rest: just two days after a severe earthquake that killed two people, at least three people have died in another quake in the south of the island state. According to the US earthquake monitoring station USGS, the new quake with a magnitude of 6.9 occurred on Monday morning (local time) around 72 kilometers off the coast of the village of Hinatuan on the island of Mindanao at a depth of 30 kilometers.

There were several aftershocks, including a strong earthquake of magnitude 5.4 off the coast of Aras-Asan further north. Two people died in the province of Surigao del Sur, according to the head of the local disaster control authority, Alex Arana. They were killed by falling debris and a collapsing wall. In the city of Tagum in the province of Davao del Norte, a pregnant woman died as a result of the quake, according to the local authorities.

On Saturday, two people were killed in a magnitude 7.6 quake in the same region in the south of the Philippines. After several aftershocks, there was another severe earthquake with a magnitude of 6.6 on Sunday.

The Philippines lie on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, where several earth plates collide. Earthquakes and volcanic eruptions therefore occur frequently in the Southeast Asian island state. In mid-November, at least nine people were killed in a magnitude 6.7 quake in Mindanao.
