Training start - Mönchengladbach goal: "Significantly better season"

Borussia Moenchengladbach started the preparation for the Bundesliga season with clear instructions from the bosses to trainer Gerardo Seoane and the team. Before the squad with the three new signings Tim Kleindienst (1. FC Heidenheim), Kevin Stoeger (VfL Bochum), and Philipp Sander (Holstein Kiel) stood before nearly 300 fans for the first time on the training ground, President Rainer Bonhof and Sportchef Roland Virkus spoke about expectations.

"We want to show everyone that we are better than 14th place. Borussia Moenchengladbach must be in the first half of the table," said Virkus. "I'm also optimistic that we will have a significantly better season."

The previous season was the worst from Borussia Moenchengladbach's perspective since the successful promotion in 2011. The former Champions League participant finished the season only one point above the relegation spot 16. Nevertheless, the club kept trainer Seoane. His predecessors Adi Hutter and Daniel Farke had to leave the club after finishing in tenth place and only one season.

President Bonhof demands more fight

"Our stadium must again be a difficult number to climb, everyone must realize that we fight. If that's the case, we will also be stronger football-wise and make points," demanded Bonhof.

Instead of a separation from Seoane, the club strengthened his position and that of Sportchef Virkus, who will sit on the bench again in the coming season. The former sport director Nils Schmadtke had to leave and was replaced by Seoane's Swiss compatriot David Zibung, who will function as Sportcoordinator License in the future. "It didn't work out on both sides. I won't say anything more about that," Virkus said about the separation from Schmadtke.

The club still wants to strengthen personnel in the defensive area. In talks is the Brazilian Bernardo from VfL Bochum. As candidates for a departure are mentioned interior defender Nico Elvedi, who is still on vacation after the EM, midfielder Manu Kone, who participates in the Olympics with France, as well as the former national players Florian Neuhaus and Christoph Kramer. Concrete inquiries, however, are not yet there, according to Virkus.
