Podcast: International Situation Update - Mölling foresees considerable progress for Ukraine.
Security expert Christian Mölling believes the new Western regulations on using weapons in Ukraine have significantly enhanced the situation there. In an interview on the "Die Lage – international" podcast on Friday, Mölling pointed out that the increased range of targeting Russian forces has decreased the threat of glide bombs in Kharkiv. He explained that Russian troops could no longer plan surprise attacks in neighboring countries, and the overall atmosphere had improved right away.
Now, the West needs to think about where they are still hindering progress. This applies to both the rules of engagement for delivered weapons and the lack of resources in the Ukrainian army. Mölling firmly opposed the idea of prohibiting the shelling of targets in Russia to prevent further agitation with Russia. He claimed this would just create safe spaces for the aggressor.
He argued that the rules of engagement should be differentiated better. While Russia responds to provocations with violence and retaliation, they fail to make political or military gains from these actions. Mölling revealed that in the past, creating advantageous positions through different military strategies was successful for Russia only when Ukraine was weak.
Mölling also reflected on the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's attendance at the 80th anniversary celebration of D-Day's Allied landing in Normandy. Mölling stated that many other peoples of the former Soviet Union faced immense suffering during World War II, including the Ukrainians. Therefore, Zelensky's participation in this event had a 'legitimizing basis'. He was dismayed that the German discussion on Ukraine's historical responsibility seldom came up, while that regarding Russia had a more significant presence. He found Putin's involvement in similar commemorations like Normandy unacceptable considering their differing sides in the conflict – Normandy meant the liberation of Europe from occupation and repression. He wished that Russian civilians could have been included instead of their government representatives. "That would have been a positive symbol," Mölling commented.
