Modify Direct Messages in X Platform Now Available
Ever sent a message on X, previously known as Twitter, that made you wish for a do-over? Now, you can edit those messages, as long as you're using an iOS device.
This update follows a more debated change made last year, where X altered the default settings for direct messages to make it harder to message individuals who don't follow you without upgrading to X Premium, formerly Twitter Blue. Luckily, this new feature is just as accessible to all users, regardless of their subscription status, and it's scheduled for release on additional platforms soon.
How to Edit DMs on X
To edit a DM on X, you'll need to be utilizing the iPhone app for now. After that, head to any of your direct message chats by tapping the envelope icon located in the bottom-right corner of the screen.
Locate one of your DMs and press and hold it to reveal a submenu with emoji reactions, the option to reply, and the brand-new "Edit message" button. This button is right next to an icon depicting a pen writing on a piece of paper.
Modify your message within the provided text box and hit the large blue arrow button located in the bottom-right corner of that text box to send the edit. Just like that, you've edited a DM on X.
Your edited message will feature a "Modified" tag beneath it, and any reactions will need to be reapplied. However, it will function as usual with no time limit on how recent DMs can be edited or any noticeable impact on the original message's timestamp.
Do keep in mind, however, that you can only edit a message up to five times. Moreover, you can't edit messages paired with images, nor is there a method for iPhone users to review the previous form of an edited message. When this feature is rolled out on Android and the web, it will operate differently—rather than the original message altering, users will receive a new message showcasing the edits with the word "modified" preceding it.
This new editing feature for DMs on X is exclusive to iOS users at the moment, using the iPhone app. Technical advancements may allow this feature to be available on additional platforms in the near future. [tech, can I edit DMs on x]
