Middle East conflict - Minister calls for ban on red triangle as Hamas symbol
Hessian Interior Minister Roman Poseck (CDU) has called for a review of the ban on a symbol associated with the terrorist organization Hamas. In Wiesbaden, several red triangles were discovered in June - a symbol that has been increasingly used in the propaganda of the Islamic Hamas for marking potential attack sites and threatening enemies, as the Interior Ministry stated in response to inquiries.
"It is unacceptable that supporters of the Palestinian terrorist organization Hamas have been using this symbol for several weeks to mark possible attack sites and threaten opponents," said CDU Interior Minister Poseck.
"We must effectively counter Hamas propaganda and aggression against Israel on our streets. That's why I consider it urgently necessary to examine the ban on the red triangle," Poseck added. The responsibility for this lies with the Federal Government. Following the massacre on October 7, which terrorists from Hamas and other extremist organizations committed in Israel, the organization has used the symbol more frequently in its propaganda.
Several red triangles discovered
According to the organization democ, several red triangles as graffiti were discovered in the Wiesbaden city area by the ministry in June. Previously, other media had reported on this. In close proximity, slogans such as "Free Gaza" and "Palestine will be free" were found.
According to democ, the symbol is currently understood by many as a seemingly harmless symbol of solidarity because it is part of the Palestinian flag. However, this use of the symbol in this form has only been in use since early November. This usage originated in Hamas propaganda.
Historically, the red triangle has been used in various contexts. During the Nazi era, the Nazis used it to mark political prisoners in concentration camps. Survivors of National Socialist persecution later used it as a symbol of remembrance and it is part of the flag of the Association of the Persecuted of the Nazi Regime – League of Antifascists and Antifascist Women (VVN-BdA).
The government faction in the Berlin State Parliament from CDU and SPD had recently passed a resolution to advocate for a federal ban on the so-called Hamas triangle.
