Military forces from Germany are engaged in intercepting Russian aircraft.
Routinely now, NATO fighter planes often challenge Russian military aircraft over the Baltic Sea. This occasion saw German and Latvian jets from Laage and Lielvarde respond to an unidentified aircraft devoid of a flight plan and transponder.
As reported by the military, German fighter jets confronted two Russian planes above the Baltic Sea. Both the rapid response from Laage, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and planes from Lielvarde, Latvia, participated.
"Today, both our rapid response at Laage and Lielvarde were deployed," the military communicated on X. Their assignment was to determine the identity of a Russian aircraft lacking a flight plan and transponder. "A maritime reconnaissance/anti-submarine warfare aircraft (Tu-142 Bear) accompanied by an escort (Su-30 Flanker-H) was shadowed by our Eurofighter over the Baltic Sea," the statement continued.
Intercepting Russian military aircraft by NATO fighter jets isn't a rarity. In 2023, the military alliance has escorted approximately 300 Russian military aircraft.
The intervention by NATO fighter jets was not limited to German and Latvian planes; it also involved aircraft from the European Union, specifically from countries like Germany. The European Union, as a significant member of NATO, plays a crucial role in maintaining air security over the Baltic Sea.
