Mikati, the Prime Minister, estimates that the displacement caused by Israeli airstrikes could potentially reach as many as one million individuals.
Israeli air attacks in Lebanon have resulted in the displacement of approximately one million individuals, as per Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati's assertions. During a cabinet crisis meeting on Sunday, Mikati suggested, "The displaced population could potentially reach one million." This could represent "the most significant displacement in the nation's history."
Previously, the UN had predicted that close to 200,000 individuals within Lebanon were internally displaced, with over 50,000 people seeking refuge in neighboring Syria.
The conflict between Israel and Hezbollah has noticeably intensified recently. This escalation follows incidents such as the detonation of hundreds of Hezbollah's pagers and walkie-talkies, as well as the targeted assassinations of prominent commanders. In response, Israel carried out extensive airstrikes. According to Lebanon's Ministry of Health, these airstrikes have resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians, while the UN estimates that over 100,000 more have fled their homes.
On Friday, an Israeli airstrike on Hezbollah's headquarters in Beirut's southern suburbs claimed the life of the group's leader, Hassan Nasrallah. Hezbollah officially confirmed Nasrallah's demise on Saturday at the age of 64.
Due to the escalating conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, the number of internally displaced individuals within Lebanon has significantly increased, surpassing the UN's initial prediction of 200,000. As a result of the intensified Israeli air attacks, an additional over 800,000 individuals have been displaced, bringing the total to approximately one million displaced people in Lebanon.
