Mexico extradites employees of "El Chapo's" son
Ivan Guzman Salazar, the eldest son of the notorious drug boss "El Chapo," is still at large. However, one of his associates was arrested by the police in Mexico last year. He is now being extradited to the USA.
Mexico has extradited a powerful member of the influential Sinaloa Cartel to the USA. Sergio Miguel Vega Mendoza was arrested in Mexico City last year and is wanted by a US Federal Court on drug trafficking charges, according to the prosecutor's office.
According to Mexican media, Vega Mendoza coordinated and oversaw extensive drug deliveries to the United States. He is reportedly a close associate of Ivan Archivaldo Guzman Salazar, the eldest son of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman, the former leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, who is serving life imprisonment in the USA.
Since "El Chapo" was arrested and extradited to the USA in 2016, his sons have taken over the leadership of the cartel. One of his sons, Ovidio Guzman, was handed over to the US authorities in September last year. Three of his brothers, including Ivan Archivaldo, are wanted by the USA on drug charges.
The arrest and extradition of Sergio Miguel Vega Mendoza to the USA highlights the international effort to combat drug crime linked to the Sinaloa Cartel, with associations to "El Chapo's" family in Mexico. The USA has been actively pursuing charges against Ivan Archivaldo Guzman Salazar, the eldest son of the incarcerated drug lord. Despite his father's capture in Mexico City in 2016, the Sinaloa Cartel continues to operate with several of "El Chapo's" sons at the helm, pushing drugs into the USA.
