US election campaign - Meta keeps remaining restrictions for Trump
The Meta Platforms Inc. (Facebook) is lifting most restrictions on former President Donald Trump before the hot phase of the race for the White House. This means that he will no longer face harsher penalties for rule violations.
Trump had regained access to his Facebook and Instagram accounts at the beginning of 2023. However, he could have been banned again for repeated minor rule violations.
Meta addressed this in an update of the previous blog post, stating that Trump was soon to be officially nominated as the Republican Party's Presidential Candidate. The public has the right to hear from candidates of both parties on an equal basis. At the same time, the company emphasized that all candidates must adhere to the same fundamental rules, such as those prohibiting hate speech or insults.
Ban after Capitol Storming
Trump was banned from major online platforms at the end of his tenure after his supporters stormed the US Capitol on January 6, 2021. Prior to these unprecedented events, he had goaded his supporters with the baseless claim that he had been cheated out of the presidency in the 2020 election.
In his online messages before and after the Capitol attack, Trump openly sympathized with the rioters. The platform administrators feared that new violence could ensue if Trump was not banned.
The Facebook Platform initially indefinitely banned Trump. However, the independent oversight board of Meta, which can review content and account decisions, ultimately concluded that an indefinite ban was not covered by the platform's rules. It decided that Trump's Facebook and Instagram accounts should be blocked for two years first - and then reevaluated afterwards.
